The Brompton Floor Sanding Company
London-born Ernest Thesiger (1879-61) found fame in Hollywood in the thirties. His cadaverous appearance and campy manner was ideally suited to the sinister goings-on in ‘The Old Dark House’. And equally for the role of the mad Dr Pretorius (‘to a new world of gods and monsters’) in ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’. Both were directed by his friend and former fellow-actor, James Whale.
After serving in WW1 as a private, he created the role of the Dauphin in Shaw’s ‘St Joan’ in 1922.
A later memorable appearance was as the stick thin (and stick waving) head of the firm threatened by Alec Guinness’ indestructible fabric in the 50’s Ealing classic ‘The Man in the White Suit’.
